Thank you for visiting "Today Reiki." The name Today Reiki was inspired by Dr. Mikao Usui (1802-1883), who is credited with re-discovering the process of initiation into the spiritual path of Reiki in Japan. His ethical principles of Reiki are translated to:
Just for today, do not worry. Just for today, do not anger. Honor your parents, teachers and elders. Earn your living honestly Show gratitude to every living thing. -Dr. Mikao Usui I would like to add: Just for today, Reiki.
My name is Mariah Griffith, and I'm a Reiki Master Teacher. I have been practicing Reiki since 2005. I received my Reiki Master Teacher attunements in 2015 and currently reside in Granbury, TX. I am a purist. I believe in teaching Reiki in the most accurate way possible. Reiki is passed from teacher to student by "attunements" that start the healing energy flowing through the student. One cannot learn Reiki through reading or watching a video, in order for the Reiki energy to begin flowing and to use the Reiki healing symbols, one must first be attuned by a certified Reiki Master. In Japanese, the word Reiki "Master" actually translates into something close to "sensei" (teacher) and even Dr. Usui would never say that he "mastered Reiki" as the universal life force energy that is channeled through the body of the practitioner can never be "mastered" in the Western sense. I was very fortunate to have studied under a wonderful Reiki Master Teacher, and I am only five degrees of separation from Dr. Mikao Usui himself. That means, the information was passed through Dr. Usui, five Reiki Masters, and then to me. Nobody living today knows the exact teachings of Dr. Mikao Usui, but as your teacher I promise to pass the tradition in the most respectful and accurate way possible, as it was taught to me. I will encourage you to trust your inner voice and the energy you feel and receive once the Reiki starts flowing through your body and provide support and mentor you along your journey of becoming a healer.

Dr. Mikao Usui 1802-1883
Dr. Chujiro Hayashi 1880-1940
Mrs. Hawayo Takata (1900-1980)
Reiki Lineage Most Westerners can trace back their Reiki lineage from Dr. Mikao Usui, to his student Dr. Chujiro Hayashi to Mrs. Hawayo Takata. Mrs. Takata moved back to Hawaii after studying Reiki for many years in Japan under the apprenticeship of Dr. Chujiro Hayashi. The story Mrs. Takata told, was that that during World War II, Dr. Hayashi and all of his Reiki students in Japan were killed, therefore she was the only Reiki teacher left alive. She continued to teach Reiki in Hawaii, the continental USA and Canada. She taught only Reiki I and Reiki II for several years. She did not begin to pass the Reiki Master trainings until the 1970's. By the time of her death in 1980, she had trained 22 Reiki Master Teachers who spread Reiki throughout the Western world.
